Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
IIT Madras is situated on Sardar Patel Road and is flanked by Adyar, Taramani and Velachery. The campus is opposite to the Central Leather Research Institute and Anna University. The campus is spread over 250 hectares of lush green forest, which is midway between the Chennai Airport and Central Railway station, and is well connected by buses and local trains. The campus is around 14 km from the Central Railway station. Adyar is the nearest bus terminus to the campus. The Institute in itself is located around 2.5 km inside the campus.
History 
IIT Madras was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.
Campus 
The major facilities are:
  • Well-equipped Labs
  • Spacious classrooms with all the modern facilities
  • Banks in the campus: The institute has two banks situated in the campus, State Bank of India and Canara Bank.
  • Conveyance facilities: The Institute provides Bus transport to facilitate commuting within the campus. There are four regular buses and 10 battery-powered vehicles
  • Canteens: The campus has a couple of food joints, frequented more perhaps by hostelites looking for a change from hostel grub than the occasional visitor
  • Hospital: There is a hospital in the campus
  • Post office: The campus has a Post Office and a Telecom Centre. The IIT campus comes under a separate postal zone and it is a postal delivery office.
  • Shopping centres that provide all the necessary things for the students and staff
  • Temples: There are three temples on campus - the Sree Durga Peeli Amman Temple, the Jalakanteswarar Temple and Vinayagar temple
  • Guest houses: The Institute has two guest houses within the campus. The guest house near the Admin Building is called the Bose-Einstein Guest House and the guest house in the hostel zone is called the Taramani Guest House

Placement information
The Placement Office is the nodal point of contact for companies to interact with IIT Madras. The Office is well equipped and is designed to smoothly handle and support the placement process at all stages. Infrastructure for pre-placement talks, written tests, group discussions and personal interviews is available.
Student Activities
The various student societies and activities are:
  • NCC aims at promoting leadership, comradeship and spirit of sportsmanship among the students
  • National Sports Organization with an aim to create an atmosphere of sports consciousness and build-up among the educated youth
  • National Service Scheme was instituted with the aim of creating social awareness among students and gives them an opportunity to serve society. The IIT Madras wing of the NSS has over 200 students, both first year and senior students, contributing to the cause of the scheme
  • Music Club for the students who are interested in music
  • Hobby Club promotes various hobbies of the students
  • IIT Madras Film Society is constituted by a group of movie lovers that screens movies in the campus
  • Speaking Club organizes debates discussions etc.
  • Amateur Radio Club provides an opportunity for the students to make programmes
  • Photography Club helps the students who are interested in photography to showcase their talents
